The original woodwork is one of the most eye-catching features
of the interior, along with the 12-foot ceilings and interior
folding shutters. The six
guest
rooms boast private baths, antique outfitting, and some have
fireplaces. Guests are invited to relax in the elegant parlor,
with its beautiful fireplace and baby grand piano, or select a
good book from the well-stocked library.
Spencer House is still an architectural showplace. Pat & Keith Hagenbuch purchased the home and opened it as a Bed and Breakfast back in 1992. At that time, Spencer House was the first bed and breakfast in Erie and has received an overwhelming response in popularity.
Now the Lawrence Family has the privilege of calling themselves, Innkeepers of the Spencer House. Joe and Laurie, along with their two children, Kyle and Jayde, enjoy serving and catering to guests from around the world and down the street. It has long been a dream of the family to own and operate a Bed and Breakfast but one look at the Spencer House was all it took to fall in love.
Joe and Laurie have great plans for the home. Already opening an additional guest room and looking to add two more suites within the year. VCR’s are also located in all guest rooms now. Other additions include a guest computer and video library. Future plans include whirlpool tubs, fitness equipment, guest snack bar and weekend packages.
Spencer House is also the perfect place for small weddings, business luncheons or meetings, parties or any other special event where personalized attention is important to the function's success. Spencer House is also a perfect home-away-from-home for the harried business traveler; the comfortable and relaxed surroundings are a welcome change for business people who want more personal service and a home-style breakfast. "We love the lifestyle we’ve chosen as a family. There is no greater satisfaction than having satisfied guests.” says Joe. "It always amazes me when guests hug us and thank us for making their stay so warm and comfortable. It’s like saying good-bye to family when guests leave,” said Laurie, “and we wouldn’t have it any other way. It's a lot of work, but being a family-run bed and breakfast, everyone chips in." It's that kind of attitude that assures success in the bed and breakfast business, and it's a sure sign that Spencer House is well on its way to becoming another Erie landmark.
